Hip to be Square

Sorry about that headline, but it couldn’t be more appropriate: FIELD NOTES user Alan Houser writes:

I thought I would send you my literal version of a Field Notes Hack.

Field Notes In Action:

Made in U.S.A.

February 23rd, 2009 by Bryan Bedell

Whether you’re a Bible-kissing red-stater or a hippie pinko liberal, we know you love America. We do too. That’s why FIELD NOTES are designed, printed, and manufactured in the U.S.A. The U.S. printing and paper industries have been hit hard by this recession, and sure, FIELD NOTES are maybe a drop in that bucket, but every little bit helps.

Temptation from Europe and Asia is too much to bear, sometimes, but never forget that America’s still got it. A Continuous Lean has compiled a great directory of “stylish and cool” American brands, and we’re very proud to make their list. There are a lot of great names there, we’re in good company. Thanks!

Fountain Pen Tests

FIELD NOTES have found a lot of fans in the fountain pen community, largely thanks to some good reviews on enthusiast sites like Fountain Pen Network, Richard’s Pens, and a few others. Fountain pen fan John G. Lowe of Laurel, Maryland decided to go a step further and try out more than a dozen pens — new and old, of various styles — in a FIELD NOTES notebook and mailed us the book for reference. His complete results follow:

Retail Additions:

FIELD NOTES go to Japan

February 12th, 2009 by Bryan Bedell

We love adding white dots to our empire of retailers, and today was a big one: Our first Japanese retailer, Elephant* in Tokyo. We also recently added new retailers on both coasts: architectural supply store Raw Materials in Los Angeles and Apple Computer specialists TekServe in New York City. We warmly welcome all three to our FIELD NOTES family.

That makes 55 retailers, worldwide! If you’re still not near a shop, you can score some directly from your computin’ box.

Stationers! Feed and Seed Merchants! Travelling Salesmen! Don’t miss your chance to get in on the ground floor of this Profit Opportunity! Contact Michele, before your competitors do.

(P.S., no we don’t have japanese FIELD NOTES. That’s just a camera trick.)

Catching up with FIELD NOTES

February 12th, 2009 by Bryan Bedell

With all the excitement surrounding our new products, we haven’t given a shout out to our internet friends in a while. Here goes:

Bartender Ryan Oakley got a FIELD NOTES notebook as a tip, and dug it. We fully endorse this practice.

Ethan Draws filled up his ninth notebook. Dan Ward is cracking open a new one, too. Tim Norton likes our copywriting, Baxter Finley is admiring us from afar, BrockLi Soup has writer’s block, Rhodia Drive thinks our orange looks familiar (it’s a totally different shade, btw!), and Dave Caolo is getting things done (ranking us above Moleskines, but below notecards. We can live with that).

Lots of photos, too:’, Beau Colburn, Jabella, Dan Rubin, Shawn Morrison, Yuko ‘n Sherlock, and Austin Moody are all showing off their new BUTCHER ORANGE memo books.

If you’re thinking about placing an order, keep in mind we’re starting to mix in a couple new “goodies” items. But we don’t want to ruin the surprise.

February 4th, 2009 by Bryan Bedell

As promised, today we’ve got some new product for you. We’ve even got new goodies to ship out with ’em. It’s like the first day of school up in here.

Regarding BUTCHER ORANGE: 500 3-packs were printed. 300 of them are gone. We just sent out an email to subscribers about how to score the rest. If there are any left tomorrow morning, we’ll post about it here. I don’t know what we’ve got to do to get you on our mailing list. If you love FIELD NOTES, please do yourself a favor and sign up. It’s nothing but good stuff.

Orange you glad you’re on our mailing list?

February 2nd, 2009 by Bryan Bedell

Two vanloads of new FIELD NOTES arrived Friday and today, including our limited-edition “Butcher Orange” version that sold out in preorder last week. We’re shipping those out right now, and we’re getting ready to unveil some new products any day now. In the meantime, check out Aaron’s new “belly band” design.

Again, if you missed out on the “Butcher Orange” preorder, there’s still hope, stay posted.
