Press Check

September 30th, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

FNtoyoWe’ve been busy with press checks lately, Our Fall “COLORS” edition and another custom project are being printed this week and headed to the bindery next week, they’ll be announced soon. Winter COLORS and a brand new product are being finalized right now, for October production, and they’ll be available before Thanksgiving. It’s always great seeing American pressmen hard at work, and let us tell you, they get as excited about FIELD NOTES as we do.

(PS, fear not, Toyo does manufacture soy-based inks in the U.S.A.)

Playful

Playful is a “day of cross-disciplinary frolicking” that just took place last week in the UK. The conference was put on by Pixel-Lab and they did a quick custom-edition of Field Notes for their attendees. We can do that for you too. The photos above are from Toby Barnes, one of the event organizers. Thanks for that.

High on Cedar?

September 21st, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

FNpencilsmacro
Pencil Revolution looks at our pencils in the first of a 2-part review…

As I said earlier, the most striking feature of this pencil, for me, is its aroma. I’ve never used a pencil that smells this strongly of cedar and have seldom ever used one to match it. It’s been a pleasure for my nose to use, and I’ve caught myself in at least one important meeting sniffing it like some sort of pencil junky.

Can’t wait to see what they’ve got to say about the noteboooks. Get your pencil fix in our (new and improved) online shop, six for $3.49.

UPDATE: Pencil Revolution has added a Part II to the review, with similar praise for our notebooks. Thanks! (See lots more reviews in the column to your left!)

One Good Turn

September 8th, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

Chapter Ten from William Gibson’s new novel, Zero History is excerpted in Wired this month. While he was working on the book, Gibson he gave us a shout out on his most excellent blog, and we sure appreciated it.

Nobody in my next novel is likely to use Field Notes products, that I know of, but I’d like to give them some (free!!!) product placement right now, right here on my blog. I haven’t even seen any, in person, but I love their site, and eventually I’ll get around to ordering some. I love the idea of really well-designed, well-made, preferable simple, American-made (or Canadian-made) products, particularly if they have really smartly-designed websites that are entertaining to read.

So, in the interest of fair play, because we’re big fans and because the excerpt is (no surprise) awesome, we’re giving Zero History a (free!!!) product placement right back.

Field Notes at Day Camp

September 2nd, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

bfc_FN2

bfc_FN1The Between Friends Club of Calgary, Alberta, Canada organizes programs to create relationships between people with disabilities and their community. One of their great programs is Camp Bonaventure, a summer day camp for kids with or without disabilities. The camp builds friendships through the usual great outdoorsy stuff we all remember from camp, plus challenges that test campers potential and teamwork. We sent up some notebooks for campers and councilors to document their experiences. Thank you for all you do, Between Friends Club!

“A Toque and Some Headphones”

September 1st, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

FN_nemu_nemu

An embarrassingly late shout out to Audra of the long-running and great Nemu*Nemu comic. Ages ago, Audra sent us an awesome limited-edition Gocco-printed Field Notes notebook featuring Nemu and Anpan in Bob and Doug McKenzie garb, created in an edition of 15 to sell at a Canadian comics convention. The Canuckophile’s dream notebook references the album-only pre-song banter with Geddy Lee on “Take Off,” and we’re going to assume the root beer is a reference to Canada’s second-most-beloved-brothers.

Audra and her Gocco have been cranking out customized FIELD NOTES for a while now, and you’re in luck, the current “Up Up and Away” version is available now in the Nemu shop.

UPDATE: Audra posted more photos of older editions on her blog, and they’re promising new editions for October and November.
