Rough Trade Shops

We’ve been busy with several FIELD NOTES customizations lately, and one of our favorites is pictured above. Rough Trade’s first record shop opened in 1976 and became legendary in punk, reggae, post-punk, and indie circles. A record label followed in 1978, putting out records by The Smiths, Scritti Politti, Swell Maps, Stiff Little Fingers, Cabaret Voltaire, and hundreds more great bands. The label was spun off from the store in 1982, but Rough Trade Shops’ two London locations are still gobbing in the face of a declining music retail industry, providing a carefully-curated selection for discerning music junkies. We’re ecstatic to know our humble notebooks will soon be on their shelves.

Levi’s and Field Notes

We here at Field Notes have been lucky enough to have done some cool co-promotions with some pretty cool people. We did a special run of notebooks for our pals at Threadless and just recently did a fun collaboration with the crew at Sound Opinions. Plus, we’ve had a blast working with Oakley, Microsoft MIX, Gowalla and J Crew too.

We are super excited about our latest collaboration, a special edition for a summer store promotion for the Levi Strauss Company. The result is a custom 3-pack with a red, a white and a blue notebook on French Construction 100# cover with a double-hit of metallic silver ink. They are gorgeous, if we do say so ourselves, and they’re only available in Levi’s stores. Find a location near you here and stop in and pick up a pack to add to your Field Notes collection.

Field Notes + Evernote = Awesome

One of our favorite people, Interaction Design czar Brendan Dawes, is using some of our favorite software, Evernote to catalog his FIELD NOTES.

For each Field Note book I simply scanned (…) each double spread (…) Then I made a new notebook in Evernote and dropped them in.

Here’s the killer thing though. Evernote indexes handwritten notes and makes the text searchable. It’s not perfect but it now means that my Field Notes archive is now searchable. It also means that they’re always with me; on my iPhone, the web or on my desktop.

Evernote made their own custom-branded FIELD NOTES way back in October 2008, we’ve always known that Evernotes and FIELD NOTES were a match made in heaven.

Threadless Winner, Chicken Dinner, and More Customized Field Notes

You may remember we made some custom FIELD NOTES for our friends at Threadless and they ran a contest on flickr a coupl’a weeks ago. One of the ten winners, Kyle Kastranec, posted some photos of his winnings and shared his winning entry:

So I answered the question of how I would use a custom 3-pack of Threadless Field Notes with this:

I will use the first to plan a chest painting for every single Cleveland Browns home game next season.

I will use the second to document my vintage t-shirt collection (via precise color facsimiles) for future generations to envy.

And I will use the third to help me memorize the name and placement of every human organ in case I decide to become a doctor.

We will certainly follow up with Kyle to see the finished notebooks, especially the chest painting sketches, matched to photos, matched to Browns’ final scores. Thanks, Kyle!

We’ve been crazy busy with custom editions lately. Aside from a few “logo jobs” like these, we did Kids’ “Neon Ice Pop” FIELD NOTES for J.Crew’s “CrewCuts” kids’ store, the aforementioned Threadless books, and a couple other colorful runs we can’t talk about yet, not to mention our upcoming limited-edition Spring 2010 COLORS set, which will be available soon for presale to our e-mail list. To a Tee: Win Threadless Field Notes!

If you’re a FIELD NOTES spotter/completist (and we know there are some of you out there) you may be horrified to learn that we’ve been supplying customized FIELD NOTES to various friends and other cool people for the past couple years. Your complete collection is NOT complete (in fact, neither is ours, we can’t find a copy of the fourth printing ANYWHERE).

Generally, we don’t make a big deal about it, but one of our recent printings is too cool not to mention, and a handful of them are available to the public through a contest this weekend.

Surely you’re familiar with Threadless, the t-shirt empire? They asked us to make them some custom FIELD NOTES 3-Packs featuring one standard French Dur-o-Tone “Packing Brown Wrap,” one Pop-Tone “Berrylicious,” and one Pop-Tone “Sour Apple.” The best part is the paper inside, which features a t-shirt with a graph overlay.

You want these. You need them, right? Well, we printed up a bunch, and we’re not sure what they’re going to do with most of them, but they’re giving away ten on a flickr contest that’s running all weekend. So hurry up and enter, and if you don’t win, you know to keep an eye on Threadless, maybe they’ll let a few more out into the wild soon.
