Pencil Revolution looks at our pencils in the first of a 2-part review…

As I said earlier, the most striking feature of this pencil, for me, is its aroma. I’ve never used a pencil that smells this strongly of cedar and have seldom ever used one to match it. It’s been a pleasure for my nose to use, and I’ve caught myself in at least one important meeting sniffing it like some sort of pencil junky.

Ewan, John, and Jason, collectively Renegade Pencils, are on their way to Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia in an ambulance. They’re participating in The Mongol Rally, partnering with Pencils of Promise to raise money to build three schools. When they get there, they’ll also donate the ambulance. Their blog features great photo, video, and text updates from the road, and you can follow their progress on this map. As of this writing, they’re in Kazakhstan and already have loads of great stories to tell.

We wanted to support the Renegade Pencils (and their cause) from the comfort of our air-conditioned office, so we outfitted them with special “Road to Mongolia” FIELD NOTES. These books are just like our regular graph paper books, but carefully translated into Mongolian, inside and out, by our new friend Otgonbayar at mongoliantranslation.com. It was no small challenge, but the wistful charm of our original text was preserved. We hope.

You may remember we made some custom FIELD NOTES for our friends at Threadless and they ran a contest on flickr a coupl’a weeks ago. One of the ten winners, Kyle Kastranec, posted some photos of his winnings and shared his winning entry:

So I answered the question of how I would use a custom 3-pack of Threadless Field Notes with this:

I will use the first to plan a chest painting for every single Cleveland Browns home game next season.

I will use the second to document my vintage t-shirt collection (via precise color facsimiles) for future generations to envy.

And I will use the third to help me memorize the name and placement of every human organ in case I decide to become a doctor.

We will certainly follow up with Kyle to see the finished notebooks, especially the chest painting sketches, matched to photos, matched to Browns’ final scores. Thanks, Kyle!

We’ve been crazy busy with custom editions lately.
