New Calendar, New Kit

November 2nd, 2012 by Bryan Bedell

Our “18-Monther Calendar” is back for 2013, it’s in stock and ready to ship now! You get tear-off pages with November 2012 through April 2014 mounted on a new, even thicker, 6×9 backing with all-new “Real Big Days” listed on back. Visit the FIELD NOTES shop to order, and note that the new calendar has been added to “The Kit,” our one-click, low-price collection of Field Notes’ most popular items (pictured above).

Normally, we’d make a great big deal about something like this, but this “18-Monther” is just the tip of an iceberg of new products coming in the next few weeks. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list (top left corner of the site) to get first dibs on several brand-new items we’ll announce very soon. And that’s not even mentioning the Winter COLORS edition, in production now, that we’re ridiculously excited about.

Introducing THE STENO

June 18th, 2011 by Bryan Bedell

Enjoy this quick film about the production process behind THE STENO. The covers are silk-screened. You might also be interested in our previous printing films covering letterpress and foil stamping.

mononaWe’ve been listening. Devoted Field Notes fans have asked for a larger notebook, something to keep on their desks to go along with our pocket-sized and portable originals. So today we’re announcing the new Field Notes Brand STENO BOOK.

THE STENO is 6″ by 9″ with a black, Double-O Wiring spiral binding at the top, so it lies flat, open or closed. The cover is a beefy 60 pt. “Super Duty Chipboard” from Newark Paperboard Mills, and there are 80 pages of Gregg-Ruled, Finch Paper “Opaque Smooth” 70# text paper inside. We’ve been testing them here and frankly, we wonder how we ever got on without them. They’re the perfect form to keep open on your desk at all times.

THE STENO is available right now, individually and also as part of a newly configured KIT.

Spring COLORS Available Now

March 18th, 2011 by Bryan Bedell

On Thursday, we gave our e-mail list (sign up to your left!) first dibs on the newest limited-edition COLORS notebooks, the Dry Transfer “_______ Edition.” These books look just like our regular Dur-O-Tone “Packing Brown Wrap” graph-paper memo books, but we’ve left off our logo and included a sheet of dry-transfer lettering, allowing you to customize them with any text you like. 3-Packs have sold out but subscriptions are still available, but act fast, when these are gone, you’re once again stuck with the letters F, I, E, L, D, N, O, T, E, and S, placed in an order of our choosing.

Playful is a “day of cross-disciplinary frolicking” that just took place last week in the UK. The conference was put on by Pixel-Lab and they did a quick custom-edition of Field Notes for their attendees. We can do that for you too. The photos above are from Toby Barnes, one of the event organizers. Thanks for that.

High on Cedar?

September 21st, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

Pencil Revolution looks at our pencils in the first of a 2-part review…

As I said earlier, the most striking feature of this pencil, for me, is its aroma. I’ve never used a pencil that smells this strongly of cedar and have seldom ever used one to match it. It’s been a pleasure for my nose to use, and I’ve caught myself in at least one important meeting sniffing it like some sort of pencil junky.

Can’t wait to see what they’ve got to say about the noteboooks. Get your pencil fix in our (new and improved) online shop, six for $3.49.

UPDATE: Pencil Revolution has added a Part II to the review, with similar praise for our notebooks. Thanks! (See lots more reviews in the column to your left!)

Renegade Pencils and Mongolian FIELD NOTES

August 11th, 2010 by Bryan Bedell

Ewan, John, and Jason, collectively Renegade Pencils, are on their way to Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia in an ambulance. They’re participating in The Mongol Rally, partnering with Pencils of Promise to raise money to build three schools. When they get there, they’ll also donate the ambulance. Their blog features great photo, video, and text updates from the road, and you can follow their progress on this map. As of this writing, they’re in Kazakhstan and already have loads of great stories to tell.

FN_MongolWe wanted to support the Renegade Pencils (and their cause) from the comfort of our air-conditioned office, so we outfitted them with special “Road to Mongolia” FIELD NOTES. These books are just like our regular graph paper books, but carefully translated into Mongolian, inside and out, by our new friend Otgonbayar at It was no small challenge, but the wistful charm of our original text was preserved. We hope.

If you’d like to support the effort too, AND score a very-limited-edition notebook, you have two options. Hunt down the ambulance on the road to Ulaan Baatar, or order below. Only 400 3-Packs will be sold online, and $5 from each purchase goes to Pencils of Promise.

Big thanks to everyone who made a purchase.
We’re sending $2,500 off to Pencils of Promise.

“Road to Mongolia” edition FIELD NOTES will ship August 20, 2010.

This special edition is not included in our COLORS subscription service.
