Our partner in Field Notes, Aaron Draplin has published a big, beautiful, visual retrospective on his design career so far, including a section on the origins of Field Notes. You need this. Everyone needs this. It’s available at Amazon, Powell’s and all the usual places online, as well as at your local neighborhood bookshop. Find out more about the project at Aaron’s site.
Here’s what I wrote for the book’s foreword:
“I met Aaron through a mutual love of a properly kerned headline, practical no-nonsense American design, and the importance of a good story, well-told. As we came to know each other we conspired on a number of small projects and found that working together was easy and rewarding. We took a chance and decided to start a business called Field Notes, and building that has been just about the most fun I ever had in my career. That’s due, in no small part, to Aaron’s design talent, endless passion, and fierce loyalty. I can say that I’m a better businessman for having him as a partner. And more importantly I’m a better person for having him as a friend.”
