Slate has just published a piece by John Dickerson about James Callender, a character who “ruined Hamilton’s chances at the presidency and committed the end of his life to derailing Jefferson.” It’s an adaptation from John’s new book, Whistlestop: My Favorite Stories From Presidential Campaign History, and it’s a terrific read.
John helped us design the Byline Reporters’ Notebooks, our latest Quarterly Edition, and we also included an essay from John about Callendar in each notebook’s back pocket. That essay was written in the style of newspapers of the day. It’s fun to read the Slate piece and then the Field Notes adaptation to get the flavor and voice of contemporary politics and journalism from 1804.
Bylines are sold out but we made a Reporter’s Notebook as a regular part of our line, it’s called Front Page.
