A Beautiful Mess
Field Notes co-founder Aaron Draplin and a small band of co-conspirators hatched a plan to create a limited run of collaborative 3-Packs with a ton of variations. They turned out great and are available now. Here’s how it all went down:
“I was excited to be invited to MondoCon, I couldn’t help but be a little nervous. Were these poster freaks going to dig my stuff? A couple months ahead of the event, I called Dan from Landland and Mitch from Mondo and we schemed up last year’s ‘Dead Print’ edition. Ambitiously, we dug into our stacks of dead print posters: test prints, damaged goods and long-gone rarities, and turned them into Field Notes 3-Packs. They came out awesome, considering that we almost broke a printing press in Portland.”
“The only problem was we didn’t make enough of the things. Before we knew it, our stock was gone. We had to do it again this year and met with top brass officials from Burlesque of North America to scheme up a larger run.”
“We agreed on ‘passing the file around once’ from group to group, adding elements. Well, that happened about 84 times, and that’s the nightmare you are seeing on these covers: Four groups piling on the pile-on.”
“Each three-pack comes with random books, hit with random hits of screen printing ink representing the four groups involved. A shimmering ‘Babe The Blue Ox’ foil seals the deal on the cover and back cover. The innards are smooth white with a graph paper grid of “Totally Turquoise” ink. Covers printed by Ben, Jodi and Sarah at Burlesque! Printed in Portland by our buddy Lonnie. Limited edition of 11,500 spread out over five groups: Mondo, Landland, Burlesque of North America, Draplin Design Co. and Field Notes.”
“The ‘M x L x B x D’ edition is alive and shipping! Go!”
