These Pair Nicely
To the Brackets, Once Again
Field Notes returns once again as the title sponsor of The Morning News Tournament of Books, a literary cage-match that runs through March. Please join us as we read our way through the best fiction of the year.
From TMN: “In case you’re new to all this, the ToB is an annual springtime event here at The Morning News, where a group of the best works of fiction from last year enter a March Madness-style battle royale. In March, these novels will be seeded and paired off in an NCAA Tournament-like bracket. For each pairing, one of our esteemed judges will read both novels and advance one, with a transparent explanation of how they made their decision.”
You can find the competing books and judges here and also, check this Brief History of the Tournament of Books.
A Little Help Please
As is our tradition, we’ve printed a small batch of rooster-themed Memo Books, featuring a checklist of this year's tournament shortlist on the back cover. The great “reading rooster” illustration was drawn by our own Casey Rheault. The bodies are ruled in light gray, to track the progress of the tournament, make your own shortlist, or to start your own novel.
Buy as many single books as you like, for $5 each, and we’ll donate the profits to the American Library Association’s Unite Against Book Bans, which empowers people everywhere to stand up in the fight against censorship. Give us a hand please!
