With author Kevin Guilfoile, we’re raising money for United Puerto Rico through the sales of his book, A Drive into the Gap. Buy a copy for six dollars and we’ll donate twelve dollars to hurricane relief. Roberto Clemente is a central character in the story and he died in a plane crash while delivering emergency relief supplies to Nicaragua.
As Kevin writes, “Roberto’s fellow islanders are our fellow countrymen and they need our help. Today, let’s all do something to remember a man whose final moments were consumed in a courageous act of charity by helping the people he loved the most.”
Two Cents About our “Dimes”
The photo above is from Veldez, who writes that we, “have tapped into an unpretentious mixture of blue collar durability found on the job site and literary creativity found in a corner booth at the local coffeehouse.” Right on.
Our current limited release for fall, The “Dime Novel” Edition is one that people liked right when we announced it. But at HQ we couldn’t wait until the shipments started arriving. It’s a very tactile edition and there are many production details that really shine in person, but we found difficult to communicate through text and photography. So, we waited a bit to shout out some reviews, and we’re glad we did.
In a guest post at Woodclinched, Harry C. Marks wrote, “This is a book begging to be written in and yet holding it, it feels too beautiful to sully with one’s own musings. How funny is that? A notebook modeled on cheap, mass market ‘literature’ isn’t cheap looking enough for the average to-do list.” Tina Koyama of The Well-Apointed Desk wrote, “It’s an ideal cross-over book: Write or draw, as you please. In fact, I have big plans to use a Dime Novel as a travel journal. Although I generally keep my journals separate from my sketchbooks, traveling is the one time I like to both write and sketch in the same book. Dime Novel’s pages are heavy enough to support glued-in photos and ephemera, and the slender profile is a handy traveler that won’t weigh me down.” Ben Dahl wrote, at Cool Material, “ If you’re anywhere near as much of a notebook junkie as we are you’ll want this in your stash." Thanks for all that, folks.
Ten Years After
October marks Field Notes’ Tenth Anniversary. Phew. I guarantee that Aaron and I had no idea where this whole thing was going when we ordered the first tiny print run of 3-Packs. To be honest, we’re not sure where it’s going from here either. But we’re having fun, making friends, and learning lots of new stuff, so it’s definitely full-speed ahead on our second decade. Thanks for all your support and encouragement.
Aaron and Bryan have been working on something special to mark the occasion. We’ll have lots more to say about it in the next couple weeks, but, now is a very good time to be an active year-long subscriber to our Quarterly Editions. Start a subscription with “Dime Novel” and you’ll get Winter, Spring and Summer as they’re released, plus any subscriber exclusives that go along with them.
Speaking of which, our Winter Quarterly Edition goes on press shortly, and it might just change you life. Really. Our idea for spring is pretty special. Now we just have to see if we can figure out a way to make it happen in time, and on budget. More news about lots of stuff soon, if you’re in Chicago on Friday the 13th, we’d love to see you at HQ for our Open House. Also, November 11th is going to be a blast.
Boss
Ryan Trayte of Saywells Design in Tuscon got up close and personal with the embossed portion of our “Dime Novel” Edition. The rest of the covers are debossed btw. Thanks for the tweet Ryan.
