Colorways
November 27, 2020 by Erica
Here at HQ, we get a lot of emails from people showing us all the unique and creative ways they use their Field Notes. While we treasure each and every one, sometimes one will come across our desks that we can’t keep to ourselves.
California based company Elevate Fiber Arts has been a Field Notes retailer since June of 2019. Since the release of our National Parks edition, they have been using the Fifty-Nine Parks cover art as a colorway inspiration for special Parks-themed yarn skeins. It is especially fitting, as a portion of every purchase at Elevate is donated to the National Forest Foundation. I asked Barbara and Brandy to tell us about a bit about Elevate’s mission and how they found their inspiration.
We hand-dye yarn in small batches in a National Forest. We’re based in the San Bernardino Mountains just outside of Los Angeles. Naturally, it’s been our inspiration for colorways and our mission of supporting our National Parks and Forests!
We’ve been fans of Field Notes for a long time! I got my first set years ago at Vroman’s, Pasadena’s landmark indie bookstore. Once we saw your new National Park notebooks, with those striking illustrations, we were immediately compelled to translate the scenes to yarn. They’re gorgeous inspiration!
We really think everyone should have a beautiful notebook. It’s an invitation to mute the frenetic cyber world and stay grounded in the actual world around you. Screens have infiltrated our lives from simply driving a car to reading a book. For most of us crafters, it’s even become second-nature to pull out your phone or tablet to take notes as you follow along and change your patterns. A simple notebook can keep your creative time thoroughly unplugged. For us, it’s all about getting perspective and getting back in touch with our natural world. It’s where we evolved to thrive. And of course we especially love Field Notes for thoroughly caring for our forests and natural world, and inspiring others to do the same. It’s never been more important.
Thanks, Barbara and Brandy! We hope we continue to inspire, and we look forward to future colorways from Elevate Fiber Arts.
