Each year we commission new artwork for our subscriber boxes. The first shipment of a new subscription (or the first shipment of a renewal) during the year comes in this special box. For 2022, we’re also including a single Memo Book featuring the box art and more information about the artist.
Details about year-long subscriptions to our Quarterly Limited-Editions.
This year’s subscriber box art is by René Arceo. Created by hand-carving a linoleum block, the work was inspired by René’s mother-in-law and the hand-carving process itself.
“I was visiting my mother-in-law and found several old photographs and one in particular I liked and decided that I was going to use it for something. When you contacted me, I thought, well, maybe I could make it work.”
“As for the halo, she was left to raise her two daughters essentially on her own, and she reminded me of somebody that is more of a saint, you know, somebody that was able to survive and thrive despite many hardships.”
Born in Mexico, René has called Chicago home for more than 40 years. A printmaker and a cultural worker, he builds bridges to connect printmakers and arts institutions to foster printmaking. He has exhibited and/or lectured in Poland, Mexico, Spain, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, France, and the United States. Recently, he received a grant from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs to publish a book, René Arceo: Works 2010-2021.
In 2005, René founded Arceo Press to promote international printmaking exchanges with artists around the world.
