Introductions and Some Fun

We figured since we all have time on our hands these days, it would be fun to get to know each other a little better and also give away some cool stuff. Here’s Steve.

“Hello. I’m Steve Delahoyde. I’ve been working at Coudal/Field Notes since 2005. I make the films for Field Notes, as well as handling a lot of the researching and writing that appears on the books, things like all the facts and figures, and Practical Applications.”

“We didn’t start making films for every edition until 2010, for the “County Fair” Edition, when we opened a kind of pop-up shop, renting a booth at the Monona County Fair in very rural Iowa, filming the process and making a quiet, relatively-plotless documentary about it. Since then, we’ve made a film for nearly every Limited Edition (I think my favorites might be the film for Coastal and the one for Utility). At this point, I think we’ve made something like 2 1/2 hours worth of finished content, which is saying something, given that the majority of the Field Notes films are only a couple of minutes long.” (Editor’s note: Don’t forget the six-hour film.)

“I grew up in Arizona and I now live in Evanston, just close enough to Chicago to not feel too suburban. My wife Claire Zulkey is an insanely talented freelance writer. I have two boys, Paul and James, who are often monsters (even when not in quarantine), and a new puppy, Ollie, who likes to chew on everything, including my sons. I like reading books about natural disasters, true crime, political upheaval, and, fairly particular to this moment, anything else that makes it feel like “Well, it could be worse.” My favorite film is Soderbergh's The Limey, which I’ve seen 10,000 times because it’s perfect.”
