Hot Off the Press
As part of the Field Notes process, we always visit the printer for a “press check,” to inspect final printed sheets as they come off the printer. Our covers are usually printed on a sheet-fed printing press. Depending on the paper size, book size, the artwork, and other specifications, there are generally 12-20 covers per sheet.
We always bring a few press sheets back to the office. One is saved in our archives for reference, and we offer extras for sale in our Chicago HQ shop. Some of the press sheets aren't really suitable for framing; they often get chopped up before embossing or foil stamping, and sometimes there are a few different jobs on one sheet.
In this case of our “Three Missions” Edition, though, the press sheets are about as attractive as a press sheet can be. The 25"x38" sheet features six impressions of each Three Missions cover on 12pt Tango C1S stock. As it turned out, the sheet of models was the same size (80#CDomtar Lynx), and also included six impressions of each. The color bars along the edge of the sheet (used for on-press calibration) display a handsome variety of spot inks.
We figured fans of Field Notes and/or the U.S. Space Program would love ’em, so we asked the printer to set aside 100 pairs of sheets so we could make them available online at an affordable price. So here they are, suitable for framing and display in your office, living room, or mission control center. Act now, at this great price they won't be around long!
Please note that the model sheets are not perforated, they were cut into smaller sheets before die-cutting.
